Masyaf is an isolated mountain municipality, located in the Orontes Valley in western Syria among the An-Nusayriyah Mountains.It once served as a base of operations for the Assassin Order during the High Middle Ages, but fell into disrepair after the Mongol siege of 1257. The fortress of Masyaf was established in 1162 by an Assassin who would later be popularly known by his title of Al Mualim, who was sent from Alamut to establish the fortress.
