Failsafe

Prime DC Comics Universe

Failsafe's History

After the events of JLA: Tower of Babel, Batman created his Zur-En-Arrh persona and had him create an android capable of stopping him in case he ever took a life, after which Zur-En-Arrh removed the event from his memory so that in the event of a confrontation between a rogue Batman and the android, the former would have no advantages.

Failsafe remained dormant in the Batcave for years, with Alfred being the only one authorized to deactivate the program. This lasted until the Penguin faked his death and framed Batman for homicide, with the news of Batman now seemingly willing to kill people activating Failsafe, with no Alfred to stop him.

He quickly overpowered Batman and forced him to escape just to effortlessly neutralize both Batgirls and Signal when they came to their mentor's rescue. Robin managed to take Batman to the Batmobile but the android managed to catch up with them until Nightwing intervened and attacked him with the rest of the Batman Family, though Failsafe was once again able to defeat all the heroes with no effort.

After stealing Signal's mask he hacked it and retrieved the location of their new Batcave, where he found Doctor Thompkins and forced her to give up Batman's location, who had by then switched back to his Zur-En-Arrh personality.

Failsafe pursued the Batman of Zur-En-Arrh and Tim to Wayne Manor, drawing them out by destroying a painting of Bruce's parents and threatening to destroy a picture of Alfred. While Robin was quickly defeated, Zur-En-Arrh kept attacking Failsafe, uncaring for Tim's safety which caused Bruce's personality to take back control and tell Robin to get to safety while he activated the cave self-destruct, just to find out that Failsafe had already deactivated it. But as the android was ready to finish Batman it was interrupted by Superman, closely followed by the rest of the Justice League, who ordered him to stop.

This intervention by the JLA proved unfruitful, as Failsafe was able to swiftly incapacitate Superman and hold his own against the rest of the team, providing just enough time for Batman and Robin to escape on a jet. Failsafe, unrelentingly calculating, lured Hawkgirl, Martian Manhunter, Black Canary, and Green Arrow back to Gotham, incapacitating them and Nightwing with various prepared traps. Failsafe went on to take over all of Gotham, forcing all of Batman's proteges into hiding or capture and leaving the city in chaos.

Soon, Failsafe learned Batman was hiding in Atlantis under the protection of Aquaman, and entered the city, taking Aquaman hostage until an Atlantean soldier revealed where Batman was hiding. But by then, Batman had already left, making his way to the Watchtower.

Failsafe pursued Batman to outside the Earth's atmosphere, breaching the tower and getting hit in the back by Batman's New Genesis Element X Laser, breaking through his outer casing and buying Batman enough time to send Failsafe out an airlock. Reversing the teleporter, Batman detonated a portion of the Watchtower, prepared to head back to Earth. But Failsafe had overridden all means of transportation, stranding Batman in space.

Using his grappling gun, a piece of debris from the Watchtower, and his ship's oxygen supply, Batman landed next to Superman's Fortress of Solitude, barely alive, with Failsafe close behind. After defeating a healing Superman once more, Failsafe located Batman and Robin, facing off against them. Batman had prepared programming for compassion to infect Failsafe with, and inserted it into the small hole in the android's back. But the programming failed, and Failsafe fired a blast, seemingly killing Batman, after which he flew away, deactivating after completing its mission.
