Daniel Evans's History

The Mark

Daniel discreetly scanned the crowded room, searching for his next mark. As the world's greatest slight of hand artist, he prided himself on being able to subtly manipulate anyone without them ever knowing. His eyes fell upon a well-dressed man sipping scotch by the bar. The ornate gold watch and designer suit screamed "wealthy" - he would do nicely.

Casually making his way over, Daniel struck up a conversation, learning the man's name was Thomas and he worked in finance. As they talked, Daniel's hands moved with lightning speed, subconsciously practicing maneuvers. A quarter appeared and disappeared between his fingers. Thomas chuckled, oblivious to the secrets hiding in plain sight.

After a while, Daniel made an excuse to leave, discreetly pocketing Thomas' watch in the process. His crew would be impressed with this steal - a solid gold Rolex was no easy score. But fulfilling the art of deception wasn't about the material rewards. It was about proving to the world, and himself, that nobody was immune to being so perfectly tricked they didn't even know it happened.

Days later, Thomas would glance at his bare wrist in confusion. But by then, Daniel and his gang would be long gone, already planning their next illusion to both flabbergast and mystify their onlooking marks. Because for a performer like Daniel, the true prize was much more than any object - it was the satisfaction of knowing he could fool anyone, anytime, and leave them wondering how he did it.
