Borgas's History

Borgas was the High King of Skyrim in the First Era, belonging to the lineage of Ysgramor who founded Skyrim. He ruled from Winterhold province as the King.During his reign, he outlawed the traditional Nordic pantheon of deities and replaced it with an order based on the Alessian doctrine from Cyrodiil. This shift became known as the "shadow of King Borgas" and lasted over 100 years until King Wulfharth violently reversed it.Borgas was also a supporter of the prophet Marukh, whose teachings were spreading at the time. However, this caused hostility to grow between the Bosmer kingdom of Valenwood and the Empire. Borgas traveled to Cyrodiil to urge a joint war against the Bosmer. In 1E 369, Borgas fell victim to the infamous Wild Hunt that occurred in Valenwood during this journey. He was killed by the Hunt, though the exact reasons are unclear - one source states it was for the "iniquities" of his Alessian faith.

His body was presumed destroyed in the Hunt, but was secretly returned to Skyrim. He was buried in the Nordic tomb of Korvanjund alongside the legendary Jagged Crown, which is believed to have been the last crown he wore as King. With no children, a Moot was held after his death to determine his successor. Jarl Hanse of Winterhold seemed the obvious choice, but the Moot failed to appoint him. This sparked the War of Succession that plunged Skyrim into 50 years of turmoil.

In the Fourth Era, Borgas' tomb was discovered by Galmar Stone-Fist while searching for the Jagged Crown. The Last Dragonborn later recovered the crown from Borgas' draugr corpse still wearing it in Korvanjund. This was a pivotal moment in the Skyrim civil war between Stormcloaks and Imperials.
