Eru Ilúvatar is thus the monotheistic god figure in Tolkien's legendarium, the one supreme being who created all. as he has the feat-ability to create Ainur, which are described as angelic spirits and "something like gods and something like angels". The Ainur are "created from the thoughts of Ilúvatar and they all express the ideas of Ilúvatar" and are seen as manifestations of Ilúvatar's thoughts. this is similar to the Kabbalistic idea of emanation, where God creates superior beings who are manifestations of his thoughts, and then the superior beings create a physical world.
