Should the downvote return?

Created by Tyrannus, 13 d ago.

As most of you know the downvote button was removed. The only way (to my knowledge) that you still can is if you toggle it on when making forums.
We initially discussed this on the general forums but it was agreed it'd be more appropriate to make a forum discussing it.
I believe that its still possible to see its return.
Please up/downvote my 1st comment.

Alright @Tyrannus you want my argument? When everyone can see who down-voted you. It will create grudges on the site. You may be able to handle them but not everyone is the same. Not everyone will respond the same way you think they will. Let's go back to this https://www.superherodb.com/captain-america-infinity-gauntlet-vs-captain-atom/90-409871/
Holyjoe didn't like Blotsky's comment. He told him to remove the down-vote because he get offended. Making all users see who down-voted Holyjoe's comment will create conflict. Because then we will have people say "Hey @Xerodeep, why'd you down-vote my comment for? Can you remove it?" Not everyone is going to be this way. Sometimes when I see you @Tyrannus you like to reply to comments like these. https://www.superherodb.com/yoda-vs-darth-vader/90-4726/ Not everyone is going to respond in a poilte way. Whether you downvote comments like those all the time. Trust me i'm warning you, they will not always come by friendly. And also @Tyrannus I've done great things for this website. And now all of a sudden you want to make my job harder? Like I helped Holyjoe, when he was getting insulted by empty and sora. I helped BLOT, when nobody accepted his opinions and everyone was ashamed of him. I HELPED DARK, become a better debater and he has me on my favorites because of that. I HELPED JONG, when he was getting insulted by Sora by calling him stupid. AND NOW you want to do this again? I mean to tell you the truth, if you win. The good thing is ill have a lot of more people liking me that's one thing. The bad news is that I have to clean up the toxicity when you're inactive most of the time.

Also another thing is this will create down-vote wars, look I don't care if you want the down-votes back, I don't care about them either way but I just want to make you understand how toxic the site will get if everyone gets to see who down-voted one another. If you think incognito is right, then believe him I don't care. Just know that there will be repercussions for that suggestion and the site will not even be close to a better change. At the beginning when it's added it may seem great but when it's added for long. The site will start turning into a down-vote war site where another user hates another user for down-voting them. Just scroll through this whole thing real quick. https://www.superherodb.com/general-conversations-the-third/100-4120/ Just imagine if this suggestion was added by this time. It would have already made the site toxic but NOW THAT IM HERE. YOU SHOULD THANK ME, FOR WHAT I DID FOR THIS SITE. You should thank God whatever religion you believe in that i'm here because I helped this site not become toxic. And I will keep doing that. Once again I'm okay if the down-vote system returns but I strongly disagree that everyone should be allowed to see it.

I am not a toxic user and haven't been in a long time. If you ever think I am toxic, don't, just don't. If I'm ever toxic it will always be unintentional. I just use my emphasis when things get intense because I want to express myself how much I've done and why I think it will destroy it's image I believe in. So this is my argument. I'm done. They shouldn't be added because it will create more conflict in the future. While you are very good at explaining why you down-vote another user. Other users will not be great at this ability. They will resort in other ways like insults, harassment, bigotry, other negative ways and that will make the site's reputation more derogatory. So I want to make sure to prevent that this happens.

People like you are the reason so many of the old users have left this site. How about you actually contribute to this website by making battles and forum posts instead of your only interactions being arguments? By the way I’m not sure if you have a condition like Blotsky does, but your grammar is terrible.

Also, here’s just a friendly reminder. People who aren’t toxic don’t write entire essays explaining why they aren’t toxic. Actions speak louder than words.

I meant like reply briefly to the other comments but this is ok too.

If everyone on this site downvoted me and told me to my face I still wouldn't hold a grudge against anyone. All it tells me is that you disagreed with what I said and that's fine. Its only if those people started swearing or attacking me that I'd have a problem.

The way @HolyJoe reacted on that battle was almost out of character. To me that's the equivalent of begging someone to vote a certain way. If I'd seen it as it was happening I would have told him to leave it and stop being petty.

So would you rather the downvote be anonymous like it was before?

What comment were you referring to on the Vader vs Yoda page? I made a few. And I didn't downvote anyone there.

I mean literally all of those people you mentioned have me as their favourites. I could list the positive stuff I've done here too but none of that is relevant. And don't act like the saint police here when you've been toxic several times to @Mr_Incognito like in this comment thread. Whenever I've seen toxicity on this I've always called it out even if the person voted the same way as me.
Your also ignoring all the potential fights that never happened because of the downvote. Its far better to get some anonymous downvote than to have someone reply back to you calling you dumb for thinking a certain way.

Most people not just on SHDB are tired of "safe spaces" and all these cushions. People are more thick skinned than you'd think.

Your massively exaggerating. There won't be any downvote wars because we don't gain any points by doing so. If anything it negatively affects your "vibe" which was the new feature added. As its been said many times on the internet, the best way to beat trolls is to ignore them. If you don't make a fuss about it, they'll stop downvoting you.

I asked for you to make a solid argument but if I was to summarise what I've seen its basically you saying you don't care what anyone has to say because you got your way.

I'm not talking about me, I'm talking about this whole site. I don't do what's best for me. Yes, I rather it be anonymous because other users that join won't even be thick-skinned. How do you even know the majority can handle it? If everyone gets to see it then this will cause fights at times. I told you already, you are very good at explaining and admitting why. But this doesn't apply to every single user on this site. That's my point.

I am not completely sure why this is such a hot topic. I mean, at the same time, I do get it but I don't. There is always going to be those that agree with you and those that disagree with you. Always! And putting in a vote on a comment whether it is anonymous or not, isn't debating. It's just an a display of like/dislike. A debate involves dialog. I couldn't care less either way. You can have the downvote back or not and it wouldn't matter to me. I don't pay much attention to them anyway. I probably don't even notice most of them on my comments but even when I do, I don't really care. I learned that a long time ago when I let peer pressure control my decisions for months, almost a full year, on an issue and made myself miserable. I vowed I'd never do that again so I don't really let what other people think bother me so much anymore. Maybe everyone just has to go through that and learn that at some point, I don't know. But when some of you say you see that your comment was downvoted and the first thing you think is "Who downvoted me?", I just wonder why. Why do you care? That just makes me think you are insulted and want to confront them. A lot of people take things way to personally on this site. Again, someone is always going to disagree with you and this is just a superhero site to enjoy and have fun. Don't let it bother you. Ultimately, it doesn't matter or change/affect your life in any way. Just ask yourself why you care and really want to know. In my opinion, it's just not worth it. So I'm good either way, with or without the downvote. In fact, feel free to upvote or downvote this comment as much as you like. Doesn't matter to me. 😉

I wish everyone was like you @Xerodeep not caring about points. But you see it matters to people, so your opinion doesn't matter. I 100% agree with you but this has very little effect. Thank you for this response. Appreciate it.

@Jakcj, my opinion never really matters. And I'm okay with that! 😆

And actually it shouldn't matter to any of you. Why should it? We don't really know each other that well. We've never met. I certainly wouldn't expect to have any real influence on anyone here. Just being a realist with my expectations.

@Jakcj "it matters to people", but to @xerodeep it doesn't matter. So his opinion is invalid.
If you want to consider options in a certain matter, you need to hear everyone's opinion, not just the ones that agree with you (or the majority). And the 'majority' needs to consider what the 'minority' has to say. It might change their minds.

@xerodeep Your right in that people shouldn't get offended about getting downvoted and I believe most people don't get hurt when they do. However a lot of people found the downvote very helpful because it was a way to gauge how liked/disliked their comment/opinion was. And most people can't be asked to give an entire explanation why so they would just up/downvote which was still fine by me because it still helped me.
By the way did you vote on my 1st comment? I want as much turnout as I can get to improve reliability.
@Jakcj We are being open minded but your arguments so far have mainly been toxic attacks. I haven't actually seen a solid good argument from you as to why we should keep the downvote removed.

@Tyrannus, I get your point that some people like to see how liked/disliked their posts are and that's fine with me. It just doesn't matter to me personally if my posts are liked or disliked so it also doesn't matter to me personally if it is available for every post or not. If people generally want it there though, I'm good with that because it really doesn't affect me either way at that point. I definitely think that it needs to be available for certain forum topics (as it still is) for simple voting purposes, though. Beyond that I could go either way because I think point Galactus was making (but I could be wrong) is that it just seemed to be causing more hurt and anger than usefulness indicating that many do take it personally for whatever reason. So I can understand that argument as well. And since it doesn't bother/affect me either way, I am just pretty neutral on it.

My counterargument to that was the pros outweigh the cons. I personally got downvoted a lot but I found it helpful. You even admitted it doesn't affect you so surely this is a strong enough reason to justify its return.
Its possible to people who used to call out whenever they got downvoted were people who weren't used to it because it'd happen so rarely.

I know for a fact there are some people on this site who downvote people regardless of the point they make simply because they support a certain character. In other words, there is spiteful downvoting on this site. Also, letting people downvote anonymously encourages people to NOT debate, since they can show they disagree without any accountability. The way to fix this isn't to remove it entirely, but show who's liking and disliking comments. That way, we can all see who's being spiteful or doing it for no reason.

Actually, it will do the reverse, it will discourage spite. If people know everybody will see if they downvote, then it gives them incentive to think through their decision more.

Well, you saying stuff like "I don't care what you have to say" is very toxic, which is ironic because that makes you a hypocrite. Plus, I know the main reason you're arguing with me is because you're one of the people who downvotes people for no reason all the time and you're trying to hide it.

@jakcj ironically your comments almost all of them have at least one downvote meaning they dont agree with your opinion. And the downvote is nessessary for debating as long as it is not used to be rude or in a inproper way.

@Jakcj Interestingly the removal of the downvote if anything made you more toxic. It was removed to encourage debate but when people tried arguing for its return you were quick to shut those people down because you got what you wanted. Saying you don't care what anyone else has to say and refusing to have an open mind in my opinion leads to toxicity. I've seen you make sly comments mainly at @Mr_Incognito for example.
I can't speak on behalf of everyone but surly seeing a minus number on your comment is far less offensive than any actual attacks on the comment.

Yes they should come back. The reason for this is because this website is obviously about debating and the downvote is a good way show people's opinion ot it. There are people saying that the downvote is not friendly to newer members but I honestly cant see there point, all it shows is that they disagree with your opinion. I think it should come back.

So, you don't like the (current) outcome of the votes on my sticky comment (7 pro, 8 against, not including my vote), so you decided to finally create a new topic. Which I suggested over two weeks ago.

The "majority" and "almost everyone" don't seem to care that much after all, apparently.
I don't mean it in a harsh way, so please take those things with a grain of salt.

I gave you the benefit of the doubt. I did not believe in the 'majority' wanting the downvote. So I started a 'poll'. It turns out (even with way too low numbers) to be a 50/50. Which is surprising to me.

I still want to wait till the end of the month, as I have mentioned before. I think it's better to have just one poll (comment) instead of two.

So, if you want to vote, please go to the link in this comment.

I didn't even know you'd made that comment on the forum. And it wasn't clear what up/down voting that comment meant.
I'd been meaning to make this forum for some time.

The "majority" actually do support the downvotes return as seen with my initial comment on this forum winning 5 to 1.

@Tyrannus What wasn't clear about my comment? Your comment is missing that you can downvote on (selected) forums. That makes it an unfair poll.
Besides, I don't think 5 (or 8 currently) is the majority of 500+ users. I don't expect them all to vote, but <2% is not the majority. Also, my comment is roughly 50/50 on the votes.
